A Renewable Energy Credit, or REC, represents 1 Megawatt of sustainable energy generated from a green source like wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, small hydroelectric or some other 100% sustainable source.
EnergyWatch only deals with RECs certified by the nationally administered Green-e program. All Green-e certified RECs have passed the Center for Resource Solutions' (Green-e's parent organization) vigorous standards for generation, accounting and additionality.
Customers can buy any amount of RECs regardless of their total load. However, to be eligible to use the Green-e logo in their marketing efforts or represent that they buy Green-e certified renewable energy, customers must buy at least a minimum amount of RECs as a proportion of their load:
| Annual Electricity Load | Minimum REC Purchase |
| Above 100,000 MWH | 20% of Load |
| 10,001 - 100,000 MWH | 30% of Load |
| 1,000 - 10,000 MWH | 60% of Load |
| Below 1,000 MWH | 100% of Load |
